The Christ Child

It is Christmas Eve, and for thousands of children the magic begins.

Anticipation, anxiety, excitement abounds, as this day dawns, then ushers in Christmas Day.

It can be an emotional time of year, for those whose lives that have been touched by death, illness, loneliness, and more.

The Christian celebration is meant to bring joy, but in this world there are thousands who will miss the significance of Christmas, because they struggle with poverty, abuse, slavery, imprisonment, each state robbing individuals of inner peace.

Christmas began here:

At that time the Emperor Augustus ordered a census of the Roman Empire. This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. All the people went to register in the cities where their ancestors had lived.

So Joseph went from Nazareth, a city in Galilee, to a Judean city called Bethlehem. Joseph, a descendant of King David, went to Bethlehem because David had been born there. Joseph went there to register with Mary. She had been promised to him in marriage and was pregnant.

While they were in Bethlehem, the time came for Mary to have her child. She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in strips of cloth and laid him in a manger because there wasn’t any room for them in the inn.

Angels Announce the Birth of Jesus

Shepherds were in the fields near Bethlehem. They were taking turns watching their flock during the night. An angel from the Lord suddenly appeared to them. The glory of the Lord filled the area with light, and they were terrified. 10 The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid! I have good news for you, a message that will fill everyone with joy. 11 Today your Savior, Christ the Lord, was born in David’s city. 12 This is how you will recognize him: You will find an infant wrapped in strips of cloth and lying in a manger.”

Suddenly, a large army of angels appeared with the angel. They were praising God by saying,

“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace to those who have his good will!”

The words of one carol convey the message of hope to all who choose to believe in Jesus Christ. He was, and is a spiritual balm in a world filled with pain.

What Child Is This?

What Child is this Who, laid to rest
On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste, to bring Him laud
The Babe, the Son of Mary

Why lies He in such mean estate
Where ox and lamb are feeding?
Good Christian, fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading
Nails, spear shall pierce Him through
The cross be borne for me, for you
Hail, hail the Word made flesh
The Babe, the Son of Mary

So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh
Come peasant, king to own Him
The King of kings salvation brings
Let loving hearts enthrone Him
Raise, raise a song on high
The virgin sings her lullaby
Joy, joy for Christ is born
The Babe, the Son of Mary

Jesus is the reason for the season. His birth brought a message of hope to the people of a troubled world. He did it two thousand and nineteen years ago, and still touches hearts and lives to those who choose to welcome Him into their hearts.

Our Christmas will have an empty chair at the table this year. Son, Tony, died in March, 2019, aged forty-nine, and his loss from our lives is painful. He was the Christmas Day host. Entertaining us with a banquet of Christmas goodies, was his idea of Christmas well spent.

You will be greatly missed young man. We will celebrate Christmas in a new way this year, because the emotions still run rampant, and to follow the same tradition would only bring pain. We choose to celebrate with joy, not for ourselves, but for each other.

Praying you will experience a blessed Christmas season, filled with love, family, friends and a caring church-family.
